Leonard Freeman was a producer and screenwriter born on October 31, 1920 in Sonoma County, California. He started his career as a writer for radio shows and moved to Los Angeles in the 1950s to work in television. Freeman worked on several popular TV shows, including The Untouchables and Route 66.
However, he is best known for creating the popular police procedural television series, Hawaii Five-O, which premiered on CBS in 1968. The show was set in Hawaii and followed the adventures of fictional Honolulu Police Department detective, Steve McGarrett, played by Jack Lord.
Unfortunately, Freeman passed away before he could see the full success of his creation. He died of a heart attack on January 20, 1974, at the age of 53. However, Hawaii Five-O continued to air and even inspired a remake series that premiered in 2010.
